English version of the project results of “Enlightenment 4.0 – Human understanding of AI decision-making” published on website of the Ministry of Social Affairs

Project background and key questions

How can decisions made or supported by artificial intelligence (AI) be made comprehensible for those affected? This question was investigated as part of the project “Enlightenment 4.0 – Human understanding of AI decision-making”, which was carried out by the Research Institute – Digital Human Rights Center on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection.

Project process

The project addressed the right to explanation of individual decision-making enshrined in Article 86 AI Act. The aim was to create easy-to-understand, practical and accessible guidelines for companies and those affected when dealing with this right (more information on the project can be found here). These efforts have resulted in the creation of two manuals, one for companies and one for consumers and their interest representatives, as well as a theoretical basic report. The project was also characterised by an extensive stakeholder process.

Publication of project results

The final project results are available for download on the website of the Ministry of Social Affairs in German and in English.
